Persevering through Failure – Macy’s

persevering through failure

📄 Few people know that R. H. Macy's story is one of persevering through failure. Son of a New England Whaler and Quaker, Macy started and failed at the retail business at least 4 times, plus four other types of businesses until he finally moved to New York City in 1858 to try again at the urging of a friend. He was raised in Massachusetts and after failing in retail experiences, chased gold in California, Wisconsin, and then back east to begin again in NYC. Macy left a legacy of the largest retail store in the world (one million square feet) and the largest department store chain of all. He claimed to have learned through every experience. His stops and starts represent the ultimate of moving through and learning from the rocky soil.
